Level II: Certified Sommelier Examination

The Certified Sommelier Examination is a half-day exam given in three segments: a blind tasting of two wines, a written theory examination, and a practical service examination. No lectures or tastings are provided; candidates should come prepared to take the exam and be appropriately dressed and equipped for professional wine service.

In Australia in 2012, Fine Wine Partners and the Court of Master Sommeliers will be running the Level 2 Certified Sommelier Examination on the following dates and in the following cities:

25 January: MELBOURNE, VIC

29 January: SYDNEY, NSW

The written theory examination will cover fundamental questions about the world of wine, spirits, beer and service with emphasis on the world's wine appellations and corresponding grape varieties. The 40 questions are presented in multiple choice, matching and short answer formats. Candidates have 30 minutes to complete the theory exam.

The blind tasting examination utilises the Master Sommelier Deductive Tasting Method that has been tailored to a written format. The tasting grid and instructions are available and can be downloaded and studied prior to taking the exam. Candidates have 15 minutes to evaluate two wines and fill out the tasting grid.

The practical service exam will test one of the following skills: Standard Wine Service, Champagne Service or Decanting Service. Candidates will be evaluated on a variety of elements surrounding this skill as well as their knowledge of aperitifs, cocktails, food and wine pairing, proper service temperature of wine and beverages, and ability to communicate and sell.

Written feedback will be provided to all candidates at the conclusion of the exam. Candidates who have successfully passed all three segments with a minimum 60% score will receive a certificate and a pin confirming they have been certified by the Court of Master Sommeliers and they are now eligible to call themselves 'Certified Sommeliers'.
